Walt Crawford, for Texas Library Association 2008 Conference
This is not going to be a scripted speech. Sure, I'll have source notes and topics, some from the book Balanced Libraries: Thoughts on Continuity and Change, some from more recent writing and thinking. But the nature of the program will depend on who's there: How many and from what kinds of libraries.
If it's a reasonably small group (say 50 or fewer), it's going to be a very interactive session, with me offering topics and dwelling on the things you're interested in (including, to the best of my ability, new topics you raise), before moving to a full discussion. If it's a larger group, you'll get something like a proper speech for the first part of the session--but the nature of that speech will still depend on who's in the room.
Don't worry: I won't be fumbling with last-minute changes in PowerPoint. There won't be any PowerPoint or other AV support.
I anticipate we'll discuss a variety of issues related to balancing change and continuity, balancing enthusiasm and realism, balancing the users you'd like to attract with the users who support you now--and even balancing work and life.
First, a few items you might consider reading before or after the program. (I'd prefer that you not read them during the program, but as with real-time chat, what I don't know probably won't hurt me.) With one exception, I'm only including items from Cites & Insights (in chronological order), not because there aren't other things you can read but because you'll find other sources cited within those essays.
Second, even though it's far too long (and I surely don't suggest you read everything in the list), I'm including the bibliography from Balanced Libraries: Thoughts on Continuity and Change as a sort of bonus. I haven't attempted to update that bibliography. There's some overlap between the first and second--and as to the links in the second section, I can only say that they worked in January 2007.
By the way, I'd be delighted to autograph copies of Balanced Libraries or any of my books, at the end of this program or anytime during TxLA (I'll be here Tuesday afternoon through Thursday evening).
Balanced Libraries: Thoughts on Continuity and Change, Cites & Insights Books, 2007. Available from lulu.com (http://www.lulu.com/content/737992) for $29.50 paperback, $20 pdf, or from Amazon for $29.50.
PALINET Leadership Network, http://pln.palinet.org – a wealth of material on library leadership for tomorrow's balanced libraries. Two minutes to start an account and it's all free.
Note: for essays following, when there are two hyperlinks, the first is for the (relatively unformatted) HTML essay while the second is for the (more readable but also longer) issue in which it appears.
